A race the German civilian population prayed the Russians would not win. Anthony Beevor relates the utter horror of that Russian campaign to crush Germany, reek vengeance on the population and seize power. A period where soldiers were sacrificed at the whim of their leaders, along with thousands of German civilians, including children. This is a no holds barred account of War at is very worst and the Author does not spare the details.
