Antique Framed Commemoration of the 'Battle of Jutland'
During the ‘Great War’, off the coast of Denmark’s Jutland Peninsula the British and German Navy’s assembled in 1916 entering into a battle that lasted 2 days commencing on May 31st and ending on June 1st. By the time German Navy had retreated the British Navy had lost 14 Ships and 6027 Men and the German Navy suffered the loss of 11 Ships and 2551 Men. Despite the imbalance in losses in the Battle of Jutland’ the British Grand Fleet had effectively maintained their Naval Supremacy and it became a turning point of the War with the Germans not challenging that Supremacy for the remainder of the War.
This rimu framed, glass fronted Board commemorates that event. The unknown creator (most likely a Seaman) was obviously skilled in maritime rope work, as is evident from the extensive use on the Board. The creator has gone to painstaking lengths to include photos of some of the British Ships most heavily involved in the Battle. He has also made and grouped cardboard ‘Ships plaques’ of many of the Vessels in both the British and German Navy’s that were present.
This is a true work of art and relic of the past. Judging by the Frame, in the past the Board may have hung somewhere such as a Naval Base or in a Naval Association meeting rooms.
