Vintage - Maori Maripi/Knife

Hand carved from matai in Rotorua In the 1970’s and sold as a souvenir. This replica of an original Maripi is true to one of the Manaia designs with inlaid paua shell eyes but does not include genuine sharks teeth for cutting. Original shop card still attached.

The Maripi was not traditionally used as a weapon, its purpose was to cut flesh and bone. In some cases the Maripi has a strong connection with ceremonial sacrifice.
