Author Galen Rowell was one of the Greats of the Climbing World with an impressive list of first ascents and achievements particularly on Rock. He was also an acclaimed American Wilderness / Adventure Photo Journalist before his premature death in a plane crash in 2002.

In this book Galen Rowell records the story of the 1975 American expedition to climb K2 in the Karakorum Range, on the border of China and Kashmir. At 28,741 feet K2 is the second highest Mountain on earth and is generally regarded as a much more difficult and technical climb than Everest.

The book is not merely an expedition narrative but includes substantial references to the climbing history of K2 and the lives of the local people.
