Feeling for daylight
“The photographs of Jack Adamson” Written and complied by Rhian Gallagher in association with the South Canterbury Museum.
Jack Adamson (1867 - 1951) was a pioneering New Zealand-born Mountaineer, guide, photographer. and one time Manager of the Hermitage Hotel. Jack Adamson’s guiding work and photography was centred on what we now know as Aoraki/Mt Cook National Park and the surrounding area. Adamson’s photography was not confined to just mountaineering and he also captured the faces of people and the places that were part of the South Canterbury high country. The story does not end well for Jack Adamson, he was from a working class background and unfortunately the prejudicial attitudes of the time led to him and his wife being forced to leave the Hermitage.
This is a stunning book for anyone interested in early photography, mountaineering or the Southern Alps, particularly the Aoraki/Mount Cook area.
