“The story of the Holm Shipping Company”
This book tells the story of the Holm family and their small Shipping Company, beginning in 1880 when Swedish-born Ferdinand Holm bought a share in the barque “Malay”. The Holm family built up a fleet of ships that serviced New Zealand coastal waters including the Chatham Islands. Their shipping venture also extended to Australia, the Pacific Islands and Antarctica. While the book covers the highs of this plucky family and their small fleet there were inevitably the lows - including a tragic fire on board the Homeburn, the loss of the Homeglen with all hands off Timaru, the sinking of the Holmwood in 1940 by a German raider in the Pacific and the wreck of the Holmbank in Peraki Bay. The pages also contain many references, some comical’ to the maritime characters that were part of this period in history.
