On a foggy morning in 1902 the Elingamite, a passenger steamer on the run from Sydney to Auckland was wrecked with a loss of forty-five lives on one of the ‘Three Kings Islands’ north of New Zealand. The Author tells that story and the subsequent inquiry, drawing of first hand and witness accounts from that the time, as well as photos. The last part of the book is devoted to describing the events surrounding the salvage operation, in the late 1960’s to recover the considerable gold and silver the ship carried, of which the Author was a team member.
